Flour and Co. is a new bakery in the middle of University Avenue in Berkeley, taking over the spot once occupied by another bakery, the Bread Workshop.
The 2-months-old bakery and cafe is the second location of owner Emily Day, who opened her first bakery in San Francisco’s Nob Hill neighborhood. I haven’t been to the San Francisco location, but the Berkeley cafe is spacious and bright, and filled with a lot of items to purchase, from breakfast and lunch items to counters stocked with baked goods.
On my first visit, I tried a mini monkey bread that was airy and fragrant with cinnamon flavor, and I really enjoyed the balanced cream cheese frosting that wasn’t too sweet. I also had a dark chocolate brownie that was like eating a molten chocolate cake with its rich, decadent chocolate.
On a second visit I tried a slice of seasonal pumpkin spice cake, but this time the cake seemed dense and slightly dry around the edges like it was from the day-old section. (Note: This was a Sunday, so maybe the kitchen isn’t open on Sunday?) But the frosting was just as balanced as the other items.
Both times I had a soy latte made with Stumptown Coffee, the popular brand from Portland, Ore.
Despite what might be some quality control issues with items left in the counter, I still find the selection and friendly space at Flour and Co. to be a welcomed addition to this quiet stretch of University Avenue. While it’s not a spot with a lot of walk-in traffic, I saw a lot of people making an effort to stop by for their favorite baked goods so Flour and Co. is starting to build a following.
