It was another weekend of checking out a food festival, but this time it was closer to home as I explored and ate my way through Oakland’s Eat Real Festival 2017 at Jack London Square.
The annual food celebration that highlights food trucks often luck out with warm weather, and it hit that same note this year with warm but not overly hot temperatures keeping eaters happy outside by not necessarily breaking a sweat.
I hit the first day running by going to Eat Real on Friday night, which was the first time for me seeing the festival at sunset and into the night, joined by my friends Sandy of Foodhoe’s Foraging, Brenda of Bites and Bourbon, and Christina of East Bay Dish. When I’m with Sandy and Brenda, I end up mostly taking pictures of what they eat but not really joining in because they often zero in on the deep-fried foods, like the loaded fries from Ala Mar.
I returned on Sunday and soaked in the sun while the crowds got larger as the day went on. Still, it didn’t seem as crowded as previous years, and that may be a reflection of the festival’s food offerings getting a bit predictable for some (I mean, I think I’ve eaten at 80 percent of the vendors).
Some of my favorite bites include the lechon bowl (roasted pig with crackling skin) made Filipino-style from Jeepney Guy truck, and also another Filipino dish, the bonjing sisig bowl at AdoruBowl, served up with a perfectly runny fried egg.
This festival’s configuration changed again this year, with much of the activity shifting more toward the center of Jack London Square. While some might feel there weren’t as many food vendors this year (and instead a lot more retail giveaways or prepared foods vendors), you still can’t beat a beautiful day outside eating near the water. This is how Oakland signs off to summer in style.
